I am a strong advocate for the integration of health and social care. However, currently our system does not work for the individual, is disjointed and inconsistent. My biggest concern as a local councillor would be STPs, or sustainability and transformation plans, and their impact on health and social care budgets, as the NHS attempts to close a £22bn gap in it's budgets by 2021. I agree with place based planning, and integration of social care, but not if it results in the
Today I met with the team at Cadbury Heath Health centre. Cadbury Heath serves over 11,000 people, offering a high standard of care in a purpose built practice. But, like many GP services, they are under pressure in a climate of reduce resources, an ageing population, and as a result of cuts to preventative measures such as public health, social care and mental health support. I spoke with them about a number of their concerns, and what they felt the NHS and GP surgeries need
Over the last few weeks, I have been overwhelmed with correspondence with regards to the Tory proposal to repeal the Hunting Act 2004, and so re-introduce Fox Hunting. If a vote was held, I would vote against. Land management and protection of livestock are incredibly important but fox hunting is a cruel and ineffective way of achieving this. The most frustrating thing is that we are even having this conversation - 84% of people agree and supported banning this barbaric sport
Schools in South Gloucestershire are already under funded. Now under current Tory Plans, the 30 schools in Kingswood could be cut by on average £446 per pupil or the equivalent of 5 teachers per school. School governors are already having to make tough decisions, and over the last week I have spoken with parents and residents in 12 of the 30 schools in Kingswood about how it is affecting them, you can check your school here http://www.schoolcuts.org.uk By cutting the number o
Our firefighters, whole time and retained, work hard to prevent fires, engage with communities and respond to emergencies. As a member of the Avon Fire Authority, I've seen directly the impact of the cuts, as tough decisions have had to be made to save almost £5 million, which is a 21% cut, from the Fire Authority budget, yet keep the risk low. Fundamentally though, these cuts to a valuable service compromises the ability of local firefighters to provide a lifesaving emergenc
Today I attended Hanham Fayre, and spoke with constituents about their concerns, from protecting the Green belt and fields, to saving Hanham library campaign, and cuts to the local schools. As a local councillor, I have been involved in a number of similar community campaigns. In Eastville, I supported the Protect Frome Valley group, where we were successful in preventing a negative development on important greenspace. If elected as your member of parliament, I would champion
Thanks to all who came to the campaign launch in Kingswood this morning. I spoke with many people who feel that they do not have a voice in parliament and are concerned about the cuts to vital public services. Labour will stand up for the many not the few, and I pledge to fight against cuts to our valuable local services, and stand up for the people of Kingswood.
I am very excited and honoured to announce that I have been selected as the Labour Prospective Parliamentary candidate for Kingswood for the General Election 2017. I will be launching my campaign on Saturday 13th of May, 12:15 this Saturday 13th of May at Kings Chase Shopping centre, and will be posting blog posts here on my five pledges for Kingswood over the coming weeks.
